Green Belt Land

A green belt is an area of countryside that has been gives a special status to restrict development. Green Belts were introduced in the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act.

Currently the UK has14 green belts total 4.5 million hectares, which is approximately 35% of the country. Of the 162 developments on green belt approved since 1997, 34 have been in the south east of England. In the South East, the scene of the largest house building scheme on Green Belt land under Labour, the number of Green Belt dwellings rose from 553 in 1996 to 1175 in 2000.

As the probability of green belt land being reclassified and developed increases, the outlook is ever more optimistic for those who have already invested in this type of land.
